Why I use Dulux Avista Decorative Flakes

A Dulux Avista Accredited Applicator and Dulux Accredited Painter, Jon McGlashan runs a longstanding family business that is built on reputation. That's why he will only work with products that deliver trusted results.

Jon and Paula McGlashan have been in the painting trade for 28 years. “I’ve had the same Dulux Trade rep for 20 years,” Jon says, of his lasting relationship wth Dulux. Now with two of their sons, Jai and Zane, working as apprentices, McGlashan Painting is a true family business! After four years in the Dulux Accredited Painter program and two years as a Dulux Avista Accredited Applicator, business is booming for the McGlashans.

"We are booked up for months in advance," says Jon. “Our Dulux Accreditations put the clients at ease that we’re trained and experienced with the products we recommend.”

From the Dulux Avista range, McGlashan Painting mostly uses our internal flooring epoxy coatings combined with Decorative Flakes, helping home owners transform and protect their garage floors. The end result is a seamless wall-to-wall floor that looks modern, is easy to clean and highly durable.

"The flakes produce a stunning finish. Our customers love the end result," Jon says.

Garage makeovers from the floor to the walls

Updating stained or faded concrete floors is a great year-round project that home owners can complete regardless of the weather. Once the floor has been revived, customers often decide to repaint the garage walls, creating a full garage makeover, Paula says.

"A new floor that looks fantastic allows you to turn the garage from a dumping ground into another room, like a home theatre or a mancave."

Home owners can design a floor that suits their home via a three-step process:

  1. First, they choose a base colour, with colours ranging from dark grey to a light beige.
  2. Then we offer six beautiful flake blends, which can be applied with full or partial coverage to recreate the look of composite stone or terrazzo – for a fraction of the price.
  3. Finally, the floor is sealed with a clear top coat.

"Dark grey floors with white and black flakes is a very popular choice. This looks great with Dulux Lexicon, which is a common paint choice for home owners looking to open up a space," says Paula.

Jon says proud car owners often want a stylish, modern space to house their vehicle.

"Epoxy floors offers great protection from oil stains compared to plain concrete. You can wipe the oil away with a rag. But you do need to maintain protection of your floors, especially if you are driving on them. We always recommend re-sealing every couple of years, using the Dulux Avista 2 Pack Urethane Concrete Sealer."
