Keysborough Community Project: outdoor concrete makeover
Dulux Avista is proud to support community projects, often in collaboration with our Accredited Applicators. For this outdoor event space at a Melbourne community centre, Dulux Avista donated a three-product solution to transform 400 square metres of concrete.
At a busy community centre in Keysborough, in Melbourne's south east, multiple events are hosted throughout the year. One of our Accredited Applicators, Mark Hmaidan from Spray Pave Melbourne, reached out to Dulux Avista to see if we would like to get involved in creating a tough but stylish outdoor floor.
An expert applicator with more than 15 years of experience, Mark generously donated his time and expertise to apply the flooring products donated by Dulux Avista.
"This space will be used by our community to host events and functions," Mark explains. “We could not do the work we do without the support and generosity of Dulux. We are trying to create a home that we can be proud of for generations to come and we are so grateful for all the support."

A stylish floor with UV and abrasion resistance
While the event space is under an open shelter, the outdoor floor will be exposed to UV and wet weather, as well as high foot traffic.
Dulux Avista recommended Natural Stone Look Flakes to provide a durable, low maintenance and modern floor. Victoria Account Manager Sarah Wright explains the choice: "We took into consideration the natural surrounds as well as the substrate and external area. Flake flooring with an epoxy base will protect the floor against oils and stains."

Mark says domestic and commercial customers choose Natural Stone Look Flakes as a more affordable alternative to polished concrete. "These new surfaces will complete the picture which we are trying to achieve. They will enhance our space aesthetically and practically," he says.
Application in one day
Following surface preparation, Mark achieved the desired finish in three steps. Thanks to our fast-drying products, the application was completed in a single day.
Step 1: Dulux Avista Waterbased Epoxy was applied by roller, in our popular base colour Chris White. The resin is followed by a hardener, which enables a short recoat time of just 4 hours.
Step 2: Dulux Avista Natural Stone Look Flakes in Rocky Ridge were applied by hand.
Step 3: Dulux Avista Polyaspartic Sealer was selected for ultimate toughness. This two component solvent-free clear gloss coating offers UV, chemical and abrasion resistance.
"Our Polyaspartic Sealer is particularly fast drying. In a moderate climate, it can withstand foot traffic after 1 to 2 hours," said Sarah. "It's low VOC, food grade and the absolute best product available to finish the job."
