Rockhampton Community Project: concrete sealing and internal floors

The Salvation Army provides children and young adults with vital support at its Youth Justice Community Hall in North Rockhampton. The Dulux Avista and Dulux Trade teams were proud to support this community organisation with both products and labour. Local trade professionals also came onboard to help out and see our concrete solutions in action.

This Dulux Avista Community Project was the brainchild of Dean Locram, Dulux Trade's Territory Manager in Central Queensland. As part of a larger facility update, the Capricorn Region Salvation Army had ripped up old carpet squares in its busy youth hub. They were seeking a more durable and low-maintenance flooring solution. An external concrete area also needed a facelift.

Having supported 'the Salvos' makeover through an earlier community painting day, Dean knew Dulux Avista's concrete solutions were ideal for the job. While Dean rallied his local trade network, Dulux Avista's Queensland Sales Manager Stuart Macfarlan and Account Manager Andrew Grech provided the products for inside and out.

Inspirations Paint CQ donated a floor grinder and staff volunteers for the two-day project. Several Dulux Accredited Painters attended to pitch in and learn more about Dulux Avista products.

Decorative Flakes and Polyaspartic Sealer deliver tough new floors

Inside, the team followed a four-step process.

Step 1: The floors were prepared with the grinder to remove all residue from the carpet adhesive.

Step 2: Dulux Avista Waterbased Epoxy was applied by roller, tinted in Trunk Grey from our Dulux Avista In Store Tint Range.

Step 3: Dulux Avista Decorative Flakes in Deep Granite were hand cast over the floors. These pigmented polymer flakes are a stylish but tough flooring choice. They are a popular choice for both domestic and commercial floors.

Step 4: The surface was sealed with Dulux Avista Polyaspartic Sealer. This two component solvent-free clear gloss coating is ideal for busy floors with high foot traffic.

Stuart recommended these products to deliver maximum compaction strength. He said the floors "will be more durable and serviceable".

Feedback from the Salvation Army was immediately positive. “They are really taken with the appearance of it, which is great to see. They are seeing value from it straight away,” Stuart said.

Outside, our Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer Tintable Base was tinted with popular Colorbond tint Shale Grey™. “It complements the colour of the building and ties in really well,” Stuart said.

Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer Tints are available in 20 colours, including four Colorbond colours, enabling owners to match their external concrete to their Colorbond steel roof or fence.

Training day delivers for The Salvos

Thanks to everyone who pitched in to support this Dulux Avista Community Project, including the Dulux Accredited Painters who came along for the Dulux Avista training day. Stuart said running the project as a training day delivered dual benefits, engaging with local trades while supporting a community organisation.

“It was a really good way to embed ourselves into the psyche of the market up here," he said.

Several young people who attend the youth hub also stopped by to hear from the team.

Jarrod Earle, owner of Inspirations Paint CQ, explains: “From a local business perspective and being quite active in the local community, it’s really good to be able to support these [young people] and get behind a good cause. We were able to teach them a bit about what both Dulux and [Dulux] Avista to have to offer and potentially what they may look at doing for work or even an early age apprenticeship.”

Showing its true community spirit, the Salvation Army put on a sausage sizzle lunch for the volunteers.

“Obviously [the Salvation Army] do such a great thing in the community. It’s really good to be able to do what we can to help support them to support other people,” Jarrod said.
